Crystallised vision with A.I.
September, 2022
Recently, like a lot of other designers and visual creatives, I’ve had the chance to test the Beta of Midjourney - an A.I. assistant that generates imagery based on your detailed threads of natural language prompts. The term “prompt-engineering” sums this creative process up pretty well which I also describe as a creative choose-your-own-adventure lead by your own intention, imagination and personal taste. As a visual creative, the frustration has always been that my hands can’t work as fast as my mind. The ability to now prototype, test, and iterate ideas at such speed is completely game-changing.
In the first few days of using MJ I felt my creative brain rewiring, staggered by how much is possible. In a matter of weeks I’ve visualised entire, cinematic worlds that have been stuck in my head for years, created suites of 3D objects and bodies of fine art work. While it’s not always perfect and can require overpainting in Photoshop, as a creative this feels like a new dawn in which we can be limitlessly prolific and finally crystallise the visions we’ve had locked in our heads for years.
